Kindergarten-Grade 2-- With quiet prose, Johnston tells of the special relationship between an elderly farmer and a young neighbor. Through the narrative, the labor and concerns of ranch life are described--mending fences, treating injured Herefords, and assisting in difficult calvings--although not in great detail. Central to the story is Mr. Gates's recounting of a boyhood memory and an old promise that he fulfills in the satisfying conclusion. Keavney's illustrations of landscapes and farm buildings are more skilled than those of people and animals.
