Grade 3-6-An ambitious enterprise that has uneven results. The Maestros (father and son) present 60 original riddles involving geographical references to the 50 states. Bright, colorful cartoons provide clues to the answers, and a U.S. map offers even more help. Some of the puns that form the basis for the riddles are amusing and understandable, while others require much more of a stretch. It is unlikely that even the most geography-conversant child will be able to solve many of the entries without extensive poring over the map. Even when the "answers" have been figured out, some of the place names won't make sense or the humor will be too obscure for average youngsters. This is by no means an essential purchase, but most collections can always use a new riddle book, and one that throws in a little geography can't hurt.

Gr. 2-4. Puns on place-names are funny, even those you've heard before. What city hatched in Illinois? Chick-ago. What was the river called after the wedding? Mrs. Sippi. On each page, there's a riddle about a city, state, river, or famous place, with a garishly colorful cartoon that picks up the literal images of the wordplay. The answer to each riddle includes a snippet of information or an anecdote, sometimes serious, sometimes silly. After the groans and giggles, kids may go to the clear double-page-spread map of the U.S. at the front of the book. Playing with nonsense in names is a way to discover the fascination of geography facts and the fun of language. Hazel Rochman
