PreSchool-K-- A young boy and his dog watch the falling snow, which is at times quiet, other times blowing. They race outside to make tracks, snow angels, snowmen, and to roll down a hill. Mayper's simple poem is illustrated by paintings with pen line and oil wash. Giving a sense of expanse, they fill double-spreads with shades of blue or gray, or with sunlight and shadows on dazzling white. One of the most effective joinings of text and illustration is the snowy woods with distant houses and a rabbit experiencing the "hush of snow." Against this realistic backdrop are brightly dressed cartoon children and pets depicted with dot eyes, button noses, and curved or round mouths. Humorous snowpeople pose throughout. More a mood piece than a story, the book is most successful in its discussion of the varieties of wintery experiences, although being both "ant-small" and stamping "giant's tracks" in the same scene seems contradictory. --Jane Saliers, Atlanta-Fulton Public Library
