A caterpillar comes to school in a jar and the class watches the caterpillar each day as it grows and changes. Soon, it disappears into a hard shell called a chrysalis. Where did it go? This is a perfect beginner's guide to the mystery of metamorphosis.
Named as a NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children, this book explains the life cycle from caterpillar to butterfly with easy-to-follow prose from Deborah Heiligman and warm, colorful illustrations from Bari Weissman.

Where did the caterpillar go?
It seems to have disappeared, but it hasn't. It has turned into a butterfly! From the time a caterpillar first hatches, it eats so fast that it's skin can't keep up. It sheds its skin several times as it grows bigger and bigger. Eventually it forms a shell around itself called a chrysalis. Nothing seems to happen for a long time. But then one day the chrysalis splits open, and a beautiful butterfly emerges. What a magical metamorphosis!
At age five, Deborah Heiligman checked out her first library book—What Is a Butterfly?—and her love of science and nature has grown ever since. She has written one other Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science book, On the Move, illustrated by Lizzy Rockwell. She is also the author of the middle grade biography Charles and Emma, which was a National Book Award finalist and a Michael L. Printz Honor Book. Ms. Heiligman lives in New York City with her husband and two sons.
