Kindergarten-Grade 4-- Little Old Man journeys to the other side of the mountain to see his beloved granddaughter Shoshanna wed on the first night of Chanukah. On his way, he faces storms, the theft of all but one pearl from his precious wedding gift, an accident, and illness. As he hovers near death, the King comes to him in a dream, promising that Little Old Man will be at the wedding. And he is, dancing with his beautiful granddaughter, named for his beloved wife. All promises kept, Little Old Man goes happily with the King to his death. This sentimental Old World tale is strikingly illustrated with full-color paintings showing a setting of long ago in East Europe or Russia. A full page of text is balanced by each painting in which a border sets the mood and an inset illustrates the plot. The motif of pearls blends with similar dots of light, snow, or stars to provide a unifying visual theme.
