Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Imogene, a young girl, lets her imagination run wild as she conjures up five outlandish scenarios of "what if?" for her parents. They provide a variety of answers until a positive, reassuring comment elicits the response, "that's what I thought" from their daughter. Wallner's perky illustrations sport a contemporary family with nonstereotyped parental roles. The scene of the pirates and the splashing whale is pure rollicking run, and the oversized watermelon swimming pool with the seeds as stepping stones is probably just what a child would imagine. Unfortunately, not all of the vignettes are as clever or appealing. Not a classic tale of imagination the likes of Alexander's Blackboard Bear (Dial, 1969) or Seuss's And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street (Random, 1937), but supplemental as needed and on par with Greenfield's Me and Nessie (Crowell, 1975), Bate's How Georgina Drove the Car Very Carefully From Boston to New York (Crown, 1989), or Blegvad's Rainy Day Kate (McElderry, 1988). --Carolyn Vang Schuler, Monroe County Library System, Rochester, NY
