A family's noisy little poodle barks at everything, disturbing the father, until the day everyone else goes out and the father and poodle are left alone together.

Charlotte Zolotow, an author, editor, publisher, and educator, has one of the most distinguished reputations in the field of children’s literature. She has written more than seventy books for young readers, including such picture-book classics as Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present. Mrs. Zolotow lives in upstate New York.
Valerie Coursen’s first book, Mordant’s Wish, was highly praised and earned her a Cuffie Award for Best New Illustrator. She lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with her husband and three children.
PreS-Gr. 1. This third incarnation of Zolotow's quiet story--first published in 1964, then again in 1984--tells what happens when a family goes out, leaving the father, a writer, to work at home. The father is surprised that the family's poodle, who usually annoys him by barking at every little sound, is silent when the two of them are alone. When the family comes home, the poodle reverts to normal. The father then understands that when the dog barks its because she feels protective, and he finds her barking more bearable. The text is a little shorter than in the original, but the main difference between this and the most recent edition is the new artwork. Coursen's mixed-media collages fill the pages with color and motion, offering a lively interpretation of the day's events. It's curious that one facet of the story remains the same: the father still writes at a typewriter, rather than a computer. Though libraries may not need to replace good copies of the earlier edition, which offers the same story with clean, spare illustrations, the new picture book offers an attractive option.
