Chip O'Hare wants to be just like the martial-arts hero Striper Mee. But when he goes to karate class,it isn't action packed at all! Chip thinks he's the best in the class at striking and kicking, so he can't understand why Mr. Leo won't give him his yellow belt. Then a run-in at the park helps Chip realize that being a true martial artist takes more than just a ferocious karate chop!
Young martial-arts fans will identify with Chip's desire for action and applaud his spirit in this story about what it really means to be a good sport.

Anne Rockwell is a pioneer in the field of nonfiction for very young children. She has more than a hundred books to her credit, including Why Are the Ice Caps Melting? and Clouds in the Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science series. She lives in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Paul Meisel has illustrated many books for children, including Why Are the Ice Caps Melting?, Energy Makes Things Happen, and What Happens to Our Trash? in the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series. He lives in Newtown, Connecticut.
K-Gr. 2. Chip the rabbit signs up for karate lessons so that he can be just like martial arts champion Striper Mee. The problem is that early karate training involves a lot more quiet listening than shouting "Hiyaaah!" After learning respectful protocol, deep breathing, and some Japanese vocabulary, it's on to the fun stuff; soon Chip can even break a wooden board. But when will he get his yellow belt? It's pretty clear that the delay has something to do with his snotty impatience with the mental dimension of the sport. Indeed, it's not until Chip helps a younger friend harassed by a bully, thus demonstrating the true "spirit of karate," that he finally earns his promotion. The impulse to fuse citizenship with athletics is as thinly veiled here as it was in the earlier volumes in Rockwell and Meisel's Good Sports series. More enticing than the message is Meisel's cast of animal characters, each one endearingly outfitted in a belted gi, and the inclusion of lots of facts about the art form's history and practice.
