King Bing plans to offer a pie to Queen Bea when he asks her to marry him, but the animals he passes on the way have other ideas.

Carolyn Dunn is the mother of four grown daughters. She lives with her husband, retired Coast Guard Captain Mike Dunn, in Mercer Island, Washington (near Seattle). She does not bake pies. She buys them! A Pie Went By is her first book.
PreSchool-Grade 3-A comical cumulative tale of King Bing with a cherry pie balanced on his head who goes off to court a queen. On his way, a cow, ants, a dog, a chick, and finally a fly all try to trick him out of the pie. When he won't stop, they each have an angry retort and then follow him. When he finally asks Queen Bea for her hand, she refuses him. However, each member of the procession tries to convince her to change her mind by pointing out the monarch's many wonderful qualities, including his culinary skills. Once she tastes the pastry, she gladly accepts him. Grateful, he bows to his friends and the pie falls to the ground, where they feast on it after all. The clever names; the rhymed, repetitive retorts ("'Highbrow,' mooed the cow"); and the cumulative structure all add to the humor. The watercolor-and-gouache illustrations are equally funny with exaggerated features on the animals, a cartoon landscape, and the pages of text bordered with everything from dog bones to pieces of pie. The king merrily struts down the lane with elongated face, pointed nose, and royal red robe, with a pie perched beneath his crown. The queen, with her round eyes, rosebud lips, shock of curly red hair, and dainty pantaloons, is a comic femme fatale. This tasty treat is perfect for read-aloud or lap-time sharing.
