Synopsis

This anthology brings together articles chosen to develop the theme of man's relationship to his physical surroundings. Provocative editorial comments on each article examine significant points and provide a smooth narrative that bridges the various papers and sections. Selections range from papers by prominent biologists to thematically relevant work form other disciplines. The articles, reprinted in full (many with illustrations and bibliographies), come from such journals as Science, the Biologist, American Scientist, Bioscience, Biomedical News, Journal of Mammology, California Fish and Game, the Nation, Saturday Review, and Your Environment. An important feature of the book is its use of a single topic- the DDT problem- as a model for all pollution troubles, as well as a unifying point for many of the papers. The articles were selected for their combination of illustrative scientific value and contemporary social significance. Several of the more rigorous papers should make the student aware of the kind of hard work that must serve as a basis for the more free-swinging generalizations of some "nonscientific" inclusions. The final section emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary approaches to environmental problems.
