This book has been designed to introduce undergraduate students to the original literature of ecology. We feel that the lecturer and the textbook will present the ideas and principles of ecology, but that the student must also read examples of actual studies, written by the ecologist who did the work, for an understanding of the practice of ecology. Broader in scope than other ecology texts, this text bridges the artificial barrier between ecology and evolution and integrates natural selection and animal behavior. Functional ecology is stressed early in the book. A discussion of the concepts of the ecosystem and the community is followed by a detailed consideration of energy flow and biogeochemical cycles.
