Daniel Pinkwater's gloriously funny books include The Hoboken Chicken Emergency, Looking for Bobowicz, and The Artsy Smartsy Club. He is regularly featured on National Public Radio. He lives in upstate New York with his beautiful wife, artist Jill Pinkwater.

Jack E. Davis has illustrated two picture books by Daniel Pinkwater: The Picture of Morty and Ray and Yo-yo Man. Other books he has illustrated include the New York Times bestseller Marsupial Sue by John Lithgow. He is a recipient of the New York Society of Illustrators Gold Medal Award for Humor. He lives and paints goofy pictures in Port Townsend, Washington.

The direct title says it all. Jacob (the boy) changes places with Max (the dog), and as often happens in Pinkwater’s books, hilarity ensues. Jacob spends the next 24 hours eating kibble and looking longingly at the bushes, while his mother shoos him away. Max goes to school and does homework, though in a cruel twist, Jacob eats it. Davis, who has illustrated other books by Pinkwater, captures all the fun in larger-than-life spreads with antics that fill up the pages. In one of the most amusing, Max undergoes several mood changes as he must continually throw the ball to Jacob in the park. The book ends as simply as it started. Jacob returns to his bed and Max to his rug, and the next day, all is back the way it should be. “But both of us had learned something,” Jacob says. “Being a dog is better.” Although this is a one-joke tale, Pinkwater and Davis are just the duo to multiply it.
