Includes “Memorial Address” and “Conversations on a Country Path About Thinking.” Martin Heidegger’s DISCOURSE ON THINKING comprises a statement of the point of view of his later thought. Since Heidegger’s later thought has evoked so much interest among philosophers and, in the last few years, theologians, it seems important to have significant examples of it available in English. The Memorial Address formulates Heidegger’s concern for meditative thinking and makes clear Heidegger’s understanding of the relation of meditative thinking to contemporary human life. The explanatory Conversation provides a transitional introduction into the complexities of Heidegger’s philosophy. The interplay of thought and argument, the free use of word and metaphor, the poetic summaries, all offer a new perspective on an abstract argument, which should be of help in rounding out an awareness of the vision Heidegger has of the place of man in Being. And for the philosopher or theologian as yet unacquainted with Martin Heidegger’s thought, the Memorial Address and Conversation might well provide a tempting taste of philosophy which already has a place in history.
