Travelers examines the unlikely convergence of four Asha, an imperious Indian widow; Raymond, a curious Englishman; Gopi, an impressionable young student; and Lee, an American in search of her spiritual core. In the brief snapshots that make up this book, Jhabvala moves with masterful dexterity between the lives and thoughts of her numerous characters, all of whom are equally complex and engaging. With a mixture of impassioned dialogue and subtle narrative, Jhabvala explores the psychological and cultural forces that wend their paths into inextricable knots of love and conflict.
