Synopsis

"...Betsy Hartmann argues that the real solution to the population problem lies not in coercive population control programs but in the improvement of living standards, the position of women in society, and the quality of health and family planning services." Topics include China's one child policy, sterilization abuse in South Asia and Latin America, the neglect of barrier contraception and its potential beneficial role in the fight against AIDS, and more.

From Library Journal

Hartmann sets the politics of population control in a broad historical and international context, and she argues persuasively that these programs are motivated by the needs of the wealthy, not the poor. Incentives for abortion and sterilization are used coercively; attendant medical care is inadequate; the safest contraceptive methods are not made available. Moreover, the programs are not successful. Fertility rates decline when mortality rates fall and when women have other options, conditions brought about by social and economic reform, which the author recommends. The book is idealistic, but carefully researched. Recommended. Cynthia Harrison, American Historical Assn., Washington, D.C.
