Synopsis

When the death of an attractive colleague and the details of a suspicious investment arouse the curiosity of a young bond trader at a small London financial house, he becomes caught in a web of international chicanery that could cost him more than his career.

"It is the author's insight into the complexities of the business that gives his novel so much life. And he can write.... Yes, he has a winner here." --The New York Times Book Review

Life is good for Paul Murray. The drive and determination that made him an Olympic medalist are going to make him a star in the world of London bond trading. And his mentor, brilliant and driven Hamilton McKenzie, is just the man to teach him. Paul is also just beginning to realize that he's in love with his spirited coworker, Debbie Chater. But shortly after Debbie tells him the firm has purchased $20 million in bogus securities, her body is dragged from the Thames. Soon, Paul's investigations into her death and the phony bonds threaten his career and even his life. First novelist Ridpath makes the arcane world of bond trading largely understandable, and although his prose is less testosterone-laden than Tom Wolfe's wonderfully over-the-top "Masters of the Universe" in The Bonfire of the Vanities, the macho amorality of the business comes through clearly. All in all, Free to Trade is a thoroughly enjoyable page-turner. It's also scheduled for a huge holiday-season publicity blitz by HarperCollins, so librarians can expect quite a few requests. Buy now and avoid the Christmas rush. Thomas Gaughan
