The National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing has driven a long, hard-banked road since its dirt-track days in Dixie. From small- town, whiskey-running beginnings to international, mass-market success, NASCAR has put the pedal to the metal in a glorious, tire-squealing pursuit of the winner's circle. The Thunder of America, the official, leather-bound 50th anniversary celebration of NASCAR, is an appropriate mile marker in this uniquely American story. Just open it up and feel the heat of the track and hear the growl of 700-horsepower engines. The photography is first-rate, and the many quotes sprinkled throughout are well-chosen and memorable.
