For rising young lawyer Cal Griffin, it's just another day in the Big City -- until the lights go off ... for good. Suddenly packs of pale crouched figures are stalking the darkened subways, monsters prowl Times Square, and the people all around Cal are ... changing. Similar weirdness is happening everywhere, from the dank, cold heart of a West Virginia coal mine to a remote lab in South Dakota -- where a team of government scientists has unwittingly invited something catastrophic into the world -- to the highest levels of power in Washington, D.C. And Cal Griffin is not the only one struggling to comprehend the surreal, devouring chaos surrounding him -- nor the only one who will be forced to accept a new role in this brave new world of nightmare and wonder. For the forces bled from the stilled machines are fueling a consciousness both newly born and ancient -- and more than one unlikely hero will be needed for the titanic battle between the darkness and the light.

MAGIC TIME is HarperCollins' sole science fiction/fantasy hardcover release for the 2001 Christmas season. It is the first in a series of three novels, scheduled to come out once a year.
Marc Scott Zicree has written over 90 TV scripts, with credits on shows such as STAR TREK – THE NEXT GENERATION, DEEP SPACE NINE, BABYLON FIVE and SLIDERS. Zicree’s first book THE TWILIGHT ZONE COMPANION, a bestseller and American Book Award nominee, has been consistently in print for 19 years and is nearing a half-million sales.
Last year, during the 40th anniversary of THE TWILIGHT ZONE, Zicree was interviewed by dozens of radio and print outlets, including a full page spread in the L.A. TIMES, NPR's ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, MARKETPLACE, WEEKEND EDITION, and many others.
The cover is by Iain McCaig, designer of Darth Maul and Queen Amadala in STAR WARS - PHANTOM MENACE (and busy on the new STAR WARS film). Armin Shimerman -- Quark on DEEP SPACE NINE and Principal Skinner on BUFFY -- has agreed to do the reading of an unabridged audio version of MAGIC TIME for Books on Tape.
MAGIC TIME has been lauded by legendary science fiction writers Ray Bradbury and Orson Scott Card, Leonard Maltin, and many others:
"A great read! Even non-science fiction fans will find themselves caught up in this ambitious and exciting story. This is fantasy with heart and soul. I thoroughly enjoyed it." - Leonard Maltin
"Marc Zicree is a superb writer.” - Ray Bradbury
“The best new dose of magic to hit the world of fantasy literature in a long time." - Orson Scott Card
"Magic Time is a great book! A bold and original science fantasy that, by the end, creates a brand new genre all its own. Epic, believable and very, very cool. When's the movie coming out?" - Brannon Braga, co-creator of the new STAR TREK series ENTERPRISE
"The fuse has been lit on a fantastic new epic series. Vivid, imaginative, emotional – MAGIC TIME is a blockbuster summer movie pressed between book covers. I'd urge you to prepare yourself, BUT I FEAR THERE’S NO WAY YOU CAN!” - Rockne S. O’Bannon, creator FARSCAPE, ALIEN NATION
"Exceptionally well written, and the ‘veracity’ is terrific." - Kevin J. Anderson, New York Times bestselling author of DUNE: HOUSE CORRINO.
"MAGIC TIME takes up where THE STAND leaves off. Taut writing, interesting characters, fascinating situations -- they all make me eagerly look forward to the next installment in this saga”" - Harry Turtledove

A native Angelino, I was here during the Northridge Quake, El Nino and the L.A. riots – and saw that, even during the riots, folks from every walk of life went out of their way to look out for each other, that they tend to rise to their best selves. I set about commenting on this in MAGIC TIME. To strip away all the artificial barriers of wealth, race and class that separate people, Barbara and I crafted a story in which all the machines in the world stop running and magic comes back. Because I had always loved New York City, I set a good portion of the story there, watching in my imagination the city crumble and then good folks putting their lives back together one by one, becoming closer and valuing each other more than ever before. Then, on the eve of the book’s release, the events of September 11th happened. Like everyone, I was horrified by it. But more than that, there was a sense of déjà vu, because the images I was seeing I had seen before – at least, fantasy variants – in my mind’s eye. Most moving of all, however, was the validation of what I believed people to be at core –their noblest selves in the face of crisis, pulling together rather than apart. I’m glad that our novel accurately portrayed this best – and I believe dominant – side of human nature, which usually does not get its fair share of media attention. As to what role MAGIC TIME might play now in the scheme of things, I can’t say. All I can say is that MAGIC TIME gave me a way to process what I had recently lived through in Los Angeles... and to celebrate the human spirit.
- Marc Scott Zicree
