Synopsis

“Michael [Waddell] is the real McCoy. Down to earth, clever, genuine, well-grounded, funny as all hell, kind, generous, decent, and surely one of the best natural hunters and woodsmen that I have ever grilled a sacred backstrap with.” —Ted Nugent

From hunting legend Michael Waddell, star of multiple Outdoor Channel programs, comes a poignant and funny book about growing up in rural Georgia: Hunting Booger Bottom. Waddell offers priceless anecdotes from his lifetime of hunting with the fascinating—and often hilarious—cast of characters he’s met along the way. Breathtaking and dramatic, filled with practical advice and indelible folk wisdom—and a foreword by Ted Nugent—Hunting Booger Bottom offers an impassioned defense of sport hunting and is a must-read for anyone who has ever wandered the woods with “a stick and a string” (as Waddell refers to his bow.)

About the Authors

The star of Bone Collector, Realtree Road Trips, and NWTF's Turkey Call, Michael Waddell is one of the most popular hosts on the Outdoor Channel. He has hunted just about anything that is legal prey in the United States, and much else in Africa and beyond. He was born and raised in Booger Bottom, Georgia, where he learned everything that matters.

Mike Schoby is an outdoor writer, photographer, and hunter. He is the author of five books on hunting and the editor of Petersen's Hunting magazine. He lives in Illinois.

From the Back Cover

Booger Bottom, in rural Georgia, has no road signs, no stoplights, no stores. Nobody knows how it got its name, whether from the mythical booger—part panther, part wild dog—that is rumored to have roamed there, or from the Feds ("boogers") who raided local moonshine stills during Prohibition. Today Booger Bottom's most famous product is Michael Waddell, one of the world's most accomplished hunters.

Growing up in this wild land near the Chattahoochee River, Waddell was blessed with two great gifts: a wonderful father who stoked his passion for hunting, and endless time in which to pursue it. He eventually left the backwoods of Georgia to stalk elk, moose, caribou, wildebeest, eland, and everything in between, from Alaska to Africa.

Mixing Waddell's best hunting stories with hilarious anecdotes about the people he's met along the way, Hunting Booger Bottom is a must-read for anyone who has ever wandered into the woods with "a stick and a string."

Reviews

A star host on the Outdoor Channel, Waddell talks about hunting and his memorable hunts in this anecdotal account. A Georgia native, Waddell explains that his title hails from a creek bottom where he was taught to handle guns by his father. Fond recollections of learning to shoot wild turkeys precede Waddell’s story about how he attained his high profile in the outdoors industry. Noticed in turkey-calling competitions, Waddell was tapped by a clothing outfitter to endorse their products, which led him into video production of hunting trips. Recounting his adventures carrying camera, gun, and bow and arrow, Waddell explains his hunting techniques and also provides an answer to nonhunters’ questions on what hunting is all about. Acknowledging that hunting involves being outside in great places with good buddies, he doesn’t pretend that the sport is only about nature and friendship: hunters kill animals, he declares. Direct and personable. An engaging depiction of the hunting world. --Gilbert Taylor
