Synopsis

“Ashley Fiolek’s incredible story perfectly embodies the adage ‘the only thing that deaf people can’t do is hear.’ Fiolek is an inspiration to anyone who has a barrier to overcome. My hands are waving in the air, and I’m screaming for her; this book should not be missed.”
—Marlee Matlin

“Ashley Fiolek’s not just good at motocross for a girl...she’s flat-out good. She is a tough, confident, competitive racer who has overcome enough in her life to know that nothing is impossible.”
—Travis Pastrana, nine-time X Games gold medalist and host of Nitro Circus

Called “a crusader for gender equity in her sport” by the New York Times, 2008 Women’s Motocross Champion Ashley Fiolek’s inspiring memoir about her life-long deafness, her triumph over adversity, her rise to the top of her male-dominated extreme sport, and how her family and Christian faith helped her get there. Fans of motocross and extreme sports, as well as readers who enjoyed memoirs such as Bethany Hamilton’s Soul Surfer, will be inspired by Kicking Up Dirt.

From the Back Cover

At nineteen, Ashley Fiolek is already the top female competitor in a tough men's sport: motocross, a form of off-road motorcycle racing that is one of the most competitive and dangerous extreme sports in the world. Since going pro in late 2007, Fiolek has taken gold at the X Games, won the American Women's Motocross Championship twice, and become the first woman in American motocross history to be signed to a factory team—the highest echelon of industry backing.

But Fiolek's rise has not come without obstacles. Fiolek was born profoundly deaf, a handicap that makes everyday life difficult—and competition on the track downright dangerous. Originally misdiagnosed as "mildly retarded," she was a painfully shy and introverted child—until her parents introduced her to the world of dirt bikes, which helped her escape the silence in her head and connect with others who shared her passion. She began racing at seven, and as her successes grew through hard work and no small number of broken bones, so did her confidence.

Fiolek has never believed her disability should stand in the way of her dreams. Nor has she allowed her gender to limit her career—motocross historically has been a men's sport, but with the love and support of her dirt-obsessed family, including her "Grandpa Motorcycle," her little brother, Kicker, and her dogs, Turbo and Rocco, Ashley has emerged as one of the sport's most talked-about stars, changing the way the entire industry views women. Armed with her extraordinary talent, contagious grin, and deep faith in God, Fiolek continues to venture into unknown territory, relentlessly pushing herself—and women's motocross—to ever-greater heights.

Kicking Up Dirt is a remarkable, inspiring tale of a young woman's courage and determination to succeed in the face of truly challenging obstacles.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. With her fuchsia-streaked hair and indomitable spirit, 18-year-old Ashley Fiolek is already the top girl in a macho man's sport: motocross, a form of off-road motorcycle racing that is one of the most popular extreme sports in America. 2008 marked Fiolek's first year as a pro, and her success was unprecedented: She won the Motocross Rider of the Year award, Motocross Youth Rider of the Year award, and beat an older and more experienced field to take the Women's Motocross Association Championship. Her biggest goal is to be just as fast -- or faster -- than the boys. And at only 1.5 seconds over the qualifying time for men's pro races, she's not too far from realizing that goal. Though Fiolek may look like the girl next door, she's much more than her 5'2' frame suggests. Fiolek was born profoundly deaf, a handicap that makes everyday life difficult -- and competition on the track downright dangerous. Fiolek was shy and introverted as a young child, but at seven she began racing, learning to shift gears by feeling the vibrations of her bike. And as her successes grew through hard work and no small number of broken bones, so too did her confidence. Today, she's not only at the top of her sport, but a smiling, outgoing, everyday teenager, texting with her friends constantly and talking about boys. It's this everygirlness, combined with her triumph over adversity that has drawn the attention of scores in the mainstream media and endorsement deals: She's the first motocross athlete (male or female) to be sponsored by T-Mobile, the first woman to be part of the Honda/Red Bull factory racing team, and the first woman to grace the cover of a major motocross magazine. Reminiscent of Bethany Hamilton's New York Times bestselling SOUL SURFER, ROCKET GIRL is a remarkable, inspiring tale, tracing a young woman's courage and determination in the face of truly challenging circumstances.
