You are lying in bed listening to the soft sound of rain. It has been coming down for hours. Now something is changing. The rain sounds harder and louder, and there is water running down the road, which looks like a small river. What is happening? You are hearing and seeing the start of a flood. Read and find out about the different kinds of floods, how they start, and how to stay safe. With colorful illustrations from Amy Schimler-Safford and engaging text from Katharine Kenah, Flood Warning is a fascinating look into a dangerous natural disaster.
Featuring rich vocabulary bolded throughout the text, this book also includes a Find-Out-More section with instructions on how to make a rain gauge and an infographic about saving water at home. Both the text and the artwork were vetted for accuracy by Dr. Christopher Kenah, Geologist, Division of Drinking and Ground Waters, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
This is a Level 2 Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science title, which means the book explores more challenging concepts for children in the primary grades and supports the Common Core Learning Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) standards. Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out is the winner of the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Science Books & Films Prize for Outstanding Science Series.

Katharine Kenah's Family Favorite is her grandmother's grandmother's brownies. The recipe for these delicious, fudgy-rich treats has been passed down for generations. Besides these delightful easy readers about Room 75, Katharine has written The Dream Shop, Eggs Over Easy, and many exciting nonfiction books for children. She lives with her family in Granville, Ohio.
Gr 2–5—Accessible text explains how rain can cause overflow in rivers and lakes and, as a result, flood basements and houses. The text exudes a gentle tone; many readers across the country will already be able to identify with these scenes of floodwaters, and those who don't will have seen them on their TV screens. The abstract style of some illustrations complements the discussion of saturated ground, storm surge, flash floods, and flood plains. A few insets add contrasting information, such as how elephants feel a coming tsunami through their feet. Even the annual floods of the Nile are mentioned, with visual reference to ancient Egyptian art—an indication of the wide range of content included in this slim introduction. A flood plan and a list of emergency supplies are great additions. VERDICT A general purchase for communities interested in flood awareness.—Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston, TX
