Offering an insider's view of the life and thought of Krishnamurti, this biography reveals the full story of his early years as a child-guru and media darling and his later years as an influential teacher and thinker

Krishnamurti died in February 1986 at age 90. He had been discovered by Theosopical Society leader Annie Besant, who groomed him as the Messiah that she had long proclaimed. But Krishnamurti soon rejected this role and organized religion in general, maintaining that it could not teach Truth. This biography is by a close associate who was involved not only in spiritual development but also in national and international politics as a colleague of Indira Gandhi. The treatment is therefore sympathetic but not sycophantic. The last chapters, which reconstruct dialogues between Krishnamurti and his associates, aim to give the essence of his teachingsnot easy reading, but then Krishnmurti was not an easy person to deal with. Until a definitive biography is written, this work will be valuable. Donald J. Pearce, Univ. of Minnesota Lib., Duluth
