Two recent criminal cases--the 15 bodies found near Matamoros in Mexico in 1989 and the bludgeoning to death of a teenager in Joplin, Mo., in 1987--are merely the tip of a harrowing phenomenon, claims Raschke, director of the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Denver. The crimes represent clear instances of murder by satanic cults, which the author believes to be on the rise in the U.S., fed by the proliferating drug culture. Satanism, he argues, far from being a religion entitled to First Amendment protection, is "a motivational system for the spread of violence and cultural terrorism," often involving the torture and killing of animals and the sexual abuse of children. While Raschke's style is ponderous, the impact of his message is shocking. Photos not seen by PW.
