YA King's most important writings are gathered together in one source. The arrangement is topical: philosophy, sermons and public addresses, essays, interviews and excerpts of his books. The material within each of these categories is arranged chronologically. Included are Dr. King's writings on nonviolence, integration and politics. His famous "I Have a Dream" sermon and "Letter from Birmingham Jail," as well as lesser-known works are contained in this excellent source. The excerpts from his books are full enough and balanced to give a sense of his philosophy and goals. There is a comprehensive introduction which critiques Dr. King's actions and accomplishments and their results. Detailed commentaries head the topical divisions, and there is an excellent bibliography in the appendix. A first-rate reference source. Pat Royal, Prince George's County Public School System, Md.

This welcome collection of the famed civil rights leader's works includes his major speeches and sermons, essays, interviews, and parts of his books. Washington, a professor at Union Theological Seminary, provides a brief but moving introduction. Unfortunately, the organization of the bookby literary genrecan be confusing. Also, the editor could easily have omitted some repetitious material. Still, this stands as the best one-volume compendium of King's written legacy. Anthony O.
