Rutter, a Jungian therapist, explains the mythical and tribal rituals she calls upon in treating female patients who have chosen a female therapist because they seek a feminine other. Her patients report feeling conflict-ridden, overwhelmed, or out of balance; they suffer from "external stresses that mirror a change pushing up from within; it is time to move from one place to another. An initiatory threshold has been reached, or life has been dammed up at an old stage."
