The phrase refers to the ability to see beyond the worst of situations to the mystery of goodness at the core of life. Developing this ability requires us to abandon ideas of perfection to allow ourselves to be transformed by painful experiences so that suffering becomes an opportunity for compassion and hope. Although this message is a worthy one, its impact is often lost in the authors' cheerleader style.
