The author issued a "revision" of his 1983 book, Martial Arts: Tradition, History, People, under the title The Original Martial Arts Encyclopedia [RBB S 1 93] but it was primarily a reprint of the 1983 edition. With the publication of The Martial Arts Sourcebook, the revision is truly complete.
The volume is divided into five parts: part 1 consists of the various styles and practices of the martial arts around the world; part 2 lists famous martial artists, members in the halls of fame and other awards, and birth and death dates of various personalities. Part 3 is the major section of the book and includes the champions of the martial arts, with competition results for kickboxing, karate, tae kwon do, and other martial art championships. Parts 4 and 5 provide information on films and videos on the martial arts and a business directory and sources for martial arts associations, which is worldwide in scope.
While this edition of The Martial Arts Sourcebook covers some of the same ground as earlier editions, the information has been updated to 1992 and in some cases to 1993. Checking on several addresses and telephone numbers of associations listed in part 5 with the long-distance operator showed the information provided was accurate. Libraries needing an up-to-date source on this popular topic should purchase The Martial Arts Sourcebook.
