Clean lines and moderate prices are two qualities attributed to the IKEA line of furniture and accessories. Parikh's manual highlights these particular furnishings (found in 25 countries, including the U.S.), but the aesthetic style illustrated here could easily be achieved with pieces purchased in any number of stores catering to home decorators. Overall, Parikh favors an ecology-conscious approach to interior design, as pictured in first-rate photography showing uncluttered spaces that accentuate natural fibers, light woods, and simplified color schemes. Chapters are organized according to room type and should generate many possibilities for any like-minded homemaker engaged in redoing a kitchen, bedroom, bath, or general living space. Alice Joyce

Using IKEA merchandise to illustrate, Parikh describes the principals of home decorating. More than just an advertisement for the store, this book gives practical decorating advice as well as instructions for a few projects, such as distressing a cupboard and making "no-sew" drapes. Other books such as Terrence Conran's The Essential House Book (Crown, 1994) and Creative Interior Design (Ward Lock, 1994) provide more comprehensive information, but, this book is still recommended for large collections and for libraries near IKEA outlets.
