Compares British and American photography, shows examples of portraits, still lifes, and landscapes, and discusses themes in photography

In a highly original exhibition and this accompanying catalog, the author of Julia Margaret Cameron 1815-1879 ( LJ 11/15/84) contrasts the styles of British and American pictorial photography from 1839 to the present, carefully juxtaposing 100 examples from the portraiture, still-life, landscape, and architecture genres. The halftone reproductions are small but adequate. Weaver derives his thesis, that American pictorial photography is true to fact while British pictorialism strives for "truth to appearances," from a study of the work of William Henry Fox Talbot. This stylistic analysis reveals artistic and literary roots sunk centuries before. Recommended for its high level of scholarship. Kathleen Collins, Library of Congress.
