About the Authors
Anne Rockwell was a pioneer in the field of nonfiction for very young children. She has more than a hundred books to her credit, including Why Are the Ice Caps Melting? and Clouds in the Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science series.
Frané Lessac is an American who has traveled all over the world. She now lives in Fremantle, Australia, but always looks forward to visiting Texas with her family. To bring the Lone Star State to life with gouache paints, Frané did extensive research using a video camera, a still camera, and actual and virtual tours. She is the illustrator of more than thirty books for children, including Capital! Washington D.C. from A to Z and New York, New York! The Big Apple from A to Z, both by Laura Krauss Melmed.

This entry to the long standing Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science Stage 1 series gives basic information about clouds in the easy-to-read picture-book format that is typical for the series. General information is covered, followed by more specific details about the 10 types of clouds and the kind of weather that each type portends. Double-page spreads portray panoramic scenes of children in various outdoor activities with the clouds (one type per page) hovering over them. The unique qualities of each type of cloud are given in two to three sentences of text. Two pages of back matter feature a few additional facts about clouds and simple instructions for making a cloud of your own. The open and uncluttered illustrations suit the topic well.
