Grade 6-12-- In today's technology-rich society, the time is ripe for Fleischman's book, which tells how to use copiers to create original, personalized artwork. He describes the steps necessary to make stationery, silhouettes, miniatures, jigsaw puzzles, decals, multiple images, iron-on pictures, stamps, flip books, films, stencils, and more. The introductory section includes tips and techniques to improve the final product. Each chapter includes a short section suggesting other ways to use the technique discussed. Directions are easy to follow and are clearly illustrated with black-and-white drawings, many of which look as if they were copied. The section on making films offers clever, creative suggestions. Most of the projects take a long time, a lot of preparation, and careful attention to detail. Fleischman stresses that only copyright-free material should be used if the project is to be sold, and offers sources for pictures that have the clean, clear crisp edges needed. A list of related books gives excellent sources for illustrations and includes a David Hockney book with some of his copy art included. This excellent title may provide the encouragement that many new artists need, but the cost of copying may be prohibitive to some readers. --Carole B.
