From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up Engaging and well written, Carkeet's first young adult novel reveals a keen sense of humor, believable dialogue, and honest feelings. Centering around high-school buddies Ricky and Nate's attempts to win a county-wide treasure hunt honoring the gold rush days, the book is actually the story of Ricky's coming to terms with his parents, who make secrets of important issues and lock him out. As such, it is written at a much more leisurely pace than the mystery/action elements would suggest. In delineating the characters and their relationships, though, Carkeet does a masterful job, and readers will savor the slower pace that allows them more time with the characters. Ricky and his rigid father, in particular, share some of the best-written scenes in the book; his wise-cracking friend Nate provides much of the book's humor; and Ricky's tentativeness at the beginning of his friendship with Nate and his developing relationship with a girl in his class are on target. While not all of the aspects of the search for the treasure are plausible, the clues themselves offer enough of a puzzle to challenge readers. With its elements of mystery, family relationships, beginning romance, and friendship, the book is sure to appeal to a wide readership, most of whom will identify with these characters. The Silent Treatment is golden. David Gale, ``School Library Journal''
