I was under contract for two books with Simon and Schuster. As best as I recall, Living with Magic had not just been released when Michael Korda, my editor at the company, essentially gave me the title and the theme for the book to follow it. I was not at all comfortable with presenting myself as a sex guru and that probably shows in the somewhat uneven structure that resulted. The second chapter, for instance, deals with the old Chinese divination technique found in the I Ching, which I presented in a digital format and represents more of what had interested me than the assemblage of spells and whatever found later. However, I had also been researching the interest of Western writers in the more erotic aspects of Asian mysticism and found the story of this worth telling on its own. A casual reader might well be puzzled about how all of this was supposed to fit together, and I have to admit that I was probably doing all I could to avoid writing the how-to-do-it manual combined with saucy personal tales that I think Michael had in mind. Looking back, though, I think there is still a lot that is very good in the book.
