The aim of this new volume of introductions to Anton Chekhov's last four plays is that it should act as a complimentary volume to author Magarshack's earlier volume, "Chekhov the Dramatist," and should be an attempt to read the plays in accordance with Chekhov's advice, in the hope that it might give directors and actors a clearer idea of Chekhov's own conception of them and make it possible for the audience to understand what the dramatist intended. In this way the fusion of Chekhov's and the actor's idea of a character could result, as Chekhov declared, "in the creation of a work of art."
