Opaque to Internet end users until they encounter problems with their service is the issue of the reliability of digital switching systems. For telecommunications design engineers, service providers, and software engineers familiar with the basics of telephony, Ali (senior engineer, Bell Communications Research; Piscataway, NJ) tours switching system fundamentals (including the architecture of networked systems), system software and quality analysis tools (e.g. sensitivity analysis), reliability modeling techniques (e.g. advanced Markov models), and maintenance (firmware and software). Also discusses the major DSSs in the North American network, and his own generic model in the context of up-and-coming trends. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Learn how to analyze digital switching systems and quickly assess switch hardware and software reliability! The reliability of digital switching systems is a major factor in the continued expansion of the Internet--and a key competitive differentiator in the deregulated telecommunications market. How do you upgrade the reliability of your digital switching system and improve the level of service that you deliver to your customers? You can start by mastering the digital switching system analysis tools, techniques, and methodology described in this unique book. Written by a Bellcore telecommunications expert with over 27 years of experience, this comprehensive and generously illustrated book is the first ever to bring digital switching system design, hardware and software reliability, and maintenance under one cover. It provides telecommunications design engineers, service providers, and reliability and software engineers everything needed to understand and analyze digital switches: full coverage of all digital switching system fundamentals and architectural issues; advanced markov models and the use of sensitivity analysis to help assess digital switching system reliability; state-of-the-art analysis of telephony traffic signal transfer points (STPs); detailed description of digital switching system software and quality analysis techniques; digital switching system maintenance, and analysis of networked switching systems. In addition, the book develops a generic digital switching system model that enables even the most inexperienced telecommunications engineers to quickly comprehend the basic architecture and functionality of digital switching systems. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Syed R. Ali is currently a Senior Engineer in the Integration and Implementation organization at Bellcore (Piscataway, NJ), and has over 27 years' experience in telephone engineering and digital switching system analysis. He received a BSEE from East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology, Khaka, in 1967; an MSEE degree from Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1971; and an advanced degree of DE in Electrical Engineering from New Jersey Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1971; and an advanced degree of DE in Electrical Engineering from New Jersey Instiitute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey, in 1982. At Bellcore he pioneered the methodologies for analyzing root causes for switching system downtimes. He is the author of many Bellcore's generic requirements in functional areas such as software metrics (IPQM), switching system testing, software patching, firmware and Object Oriented Process Metrics (OOPM). Dr. Ali is a frequent speaker at many telecommunications conferences and the author of numerous papers on telecommunications system reliability and maintainability. The author is a past chairman of the IEEE Communications Society and co-founder and chairman of IEEE Computer Society, New York Section. He is a senior member of IEEE as well as a member of ACM and the national honor society for Electrical Engineers Eta Kappa Nu.
