Kathleen Bardovi-Harlig is Associate Professor of TESOL and Applied Linguistics at Indiana University. She received her Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Chicago in 1983. Her main areas of research interest are the development of grammatical and pragmatic competence in second language acquisition. She has taught courses in second language acquisition designed for language teachers as well as doctoral seminars for future researchers in the United States, Hungary, and Japan. She has also taught courses in TESOL methods, interlanguage pragmatics, and discourse analysis. Her research in second language acquisition has appeared in journals such as Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Language Learning, and TESOL Quarterly. Her work on language-teacher preparation has been published in TESOL Journal and ELT Journal and in various books.
Beverly S. Hartford is Associate Professor of TESOL and Applied Linguistics at Indiana University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Her main areas of research are the development of pragmatic competence and language contact. She teaches courses in sociolinguistics, including language and society, bilingualism and language contact, World English, and pedagogical grammar, second language acquisition, and intercultural pragmatics. She has trained English teachers at universities in both Poland and Nepal, as well as conducted numerous workshops for language teachers throughout the world, including Malaysia dn Venezuela. Her publications have appeared in World Englishes, Language Learning, Studies in Second Langue Acquisition, Discourse Processes,and ELT Journal.
