Text: English, French (translation)
Barbie's 1982 arrest and internment have triggered a volley of biographical studies. The former Gestapo officer is under indictment in France for his crimes against humanity. De Hoyos, a French journalist, has written a re markably pedestrian, garbled account of Barbie's Nazi career and Bolivian af terlife. The book is poorly written, awkwardly organized, and superficial. Only when the author describes his 1972 face-to-face encounter with Bar bie in La Paz does the account become interesting. Libraries seeking a basic Barbie biography will be better served by Brendan Murphy's The Butcher of Lyons ( LJ 1/84) or Tom Bower's Klaus Barbie: the butcher of Lyons ( LJ 4/15/ 84). Mark R. Yerburgh, Trinity Coll. Lib., Burlington, Vt.

1st American Edition. Hardbound 8vo (9.25 inches tall) 310 pages. Bibliography, index. Description: Dust jacket design by Judith K Leeds. Includes two sections of black and white photo plates. The publisher's blurb reads: ''On February 5, 1981, a Bolivian citizen called Klaus Altmann was escorted into the prison yard of Fort Montlue, in Lyons, France. Former SS Hauptsturmfuhrer Klaus Barbie, known as the 'Butcher of Lyons' for his ruthless treatment of enemies of the Reich -- a man twice condemned to death in absentia by French courts -- had finally returned to Europe to face charges of crimes against humanity. This book is the most shocking and best documented indictment yet of Barbie. The author, a distinguished French journalist, has had exclusive access to previously untapped sources: the personal archives of Simon Wiesenthal, the renowned chronicler of Nazi activities, the records of Nazi hunters Serge and Beate Klarsfeld, and the unpublished accounts from the files of several governments. De Hoyos has also conducted extensive interviews in Europe with survivors and witnesses of Barbie's butchery, and in South America.''
