Gr 5-8 In this revision of her standard work, Hyde stresses that most elementary and middle school students do not use drugs; she claims they are aware of the dangers and fill their leisure time with more meaningful activities. She believes, however, that drug use among young people, which seemed to have declined in the 1980s, is once again on the rise. Sources for her conclusions are not offered. She lists characteristic behaviors that define addiction and presents in-depth discussions of marijuana, alcohol, PCP and other hallucinogens, inhalants, crack/cocaine, stimulants, heroin, barbiturates and other downers, nicotine, and steroids. The target audience is counseled on resisting peer pressure and achieving a "natural high." The author integrates case histories into the text in a satisfactory manner. As in previous editions, her style is readable, though often didactic. There is a fair amount of repetition of the 1990 version here. Updating includes the addition of a glossary (which contains a few typos), a list of organizations and hotlines, and a reading list. Nothing as ambitious as this title seems to be available for this age group.-Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, NY
