Reviews

Grade 4-8-Thirty-four activities organized into six sections-"The Young Engineer," astronomer, chemist, meteorologist, biologist, and physicist. Using the same format as Dave and Kathy Prochnow's How? (1993) and Why? (1992, both McGraw-Hill), Wood introduces each project with a question, followed by a list of supplies, step-by-step directions, expected results, suggestions for further studies, and "did you know?" trivia. Most activities call for readily available materials and a minimum of adult intervention. Safety icons stress precautions and indicate where supervision is essential, and black-and-white line drawings clarify procedural steps. Although many of the projects are interesting, fun, and related to important concepts, the book has flaws. The introduction lists the steps in a scientific method of approaching problems, but the activities themselves are not models of good experimental procedure. Also, the question posed is not always answered. For example, the demonstration for "What causes volcanoes to erupt?" simply involves adding colored vinegar to baking soda in a pop bottle. Similarly, "What keeps the North Star from moving?" only shows that the star is stationary, and "What is photosynthesis?" only shows that a leaf loses its green color in the absence of light. The bits of trivia can be amusing, but often seem so unrelated to the topic that they are distracting. Teachers may find this title to be a useful source of demonstrations; however, don't be misled by the subtitle-it's not what it claims to be.
