The ASTD Trainer’s Sourcebook: Diversity is based on my experience as a training and OD professional thrust into the potentially volatile position of stewarding a nationwide diversity initiative for a large corporation. Very few appropriate resources were available when I began this work in the late 1980s, and is true even today. Many approaches focused on differences or “white male bashing”—thereby dividing rather than uniting people. Others were just repackaged affirmative action training. Even worse, some focused on “what women want in the workplace” or “how to relate to African-Americans,” which actually reinforced stereotypes rather than overcoming them. Or, the theories seemed good on paper but fell flat in the real world.
Because of this, I decided to create my own approach, positioning diversity as a bottom-line issue that addresses today’s realities in order to benefit everyone. It produced such beneficial results that McGraw-Hill and the American Society of Training and Development asked me if they could publish it.
Reading this book will save you a lot of time and effort. As a complete “how-to” manual, it contains everything you need to create your own customized training of any length—including reproducible activities, overheads, assessments, and handouts. Most importantly, you can rest assured that people at all organizational levels, from many different industries, all over the world, have used these materials successfully. I hope you find it to be a practical resource, and I wish you much success in your diversity efforts. Feel free to email me at email@example.com.About the Author:
