The adventure continues...New Shuttle Mission...New Toys ... New Activities ... Toys in Space covers 3 Shuttle missions, 11 astronauts, and 40 toys, with more than 300 activity sheets, 120 science experiments, and 15 toy flipbooksNall tested on Earth and in space. Patterns are included for making 20 different toys, including two realistic shuttle models. Toys in Space is toy-specific (between 5 and 10 activities are designed for each toy)...hands-on and focused on process skills...grade-level appropriate (targeted for grades 4 through 8, but it can be adapted for younger or older students)...career-connected (students become technicians, engineers, scientists, mission controllers, and astronauts in the activity-packed units)...content-based and related to your classroom curriculum...and inexpensive to use.

These simulated space experiments for kids are out of this world! The adventure continues. . .New Shuttle Mission. . .New Toys. . .New Activities. . . In space. . .Will a climber, a flipper flip, a glider glide, a jumper jump, or a slinky slink? Can an astronaut ring a horseshoe, dunk a basketball, or yoyo "around the world"? The astronauts know. . .and now you can bring the basic principles of earth and space physics "down to Earth" for kids! On Earth. . .The science is real, the environment is exciting, and the activities are fun. Students build and test toys, experiment, predict what will happen in space, read authentic Astronaut Logs with photos, and even create flipbooks to test their predictions! This comprehensive resource covers 3 Shuttle missions, 11 astronauts; Inexpensive--20 toys can be constructed in the classroom. Another 12 can be purchased for less than $1 each, and the remainder cost less than $5; Content-based and related to your classroom curriculum on: Motion (speed, distance, time, acceleration). . .Forces (gravity, friction, magnetism, circular motion). . .Energy (kinetic, potential, mechanical). . .Space (orbit, weight, weightlessness, and freefall). . .Newton's Laws. Written by Carolyn Sumners, project director of the Toys in Space Program, Johnson Space Center. You choose and emphasize these content connections.
Grade 5 Up-To demonstrate principles of physics in a nearly weightless environment, the "Toys in Space" program turned 12 astronauts loose on over three dozen toys during two space shuttle flights in 1985 and 1993. Though Sumners takes a lighthearted tone throughout, this is less a book to read from cover to cover than a manual for the program's videos. The author describes how the playthings-nothing large, expensive, or battery-operated-were seleced, pretested on Earth, and then used in space. The toys are grouped systematically by type; their construction and principles of operation are explained in brief, and then, in sections headed "Space Results," their often surprising behavior in orbit is described. Sumners enhances her report with general accounts of the missions, capsule biographies of the crews, and instructions for acquiring the program's videos and other instructional materials. Though visually uninviting-dense blocks of text are broken up by utilitarian drawings and uncaptioned, often blurry black-and-white photographs-this captivating space-program spinoff will make a serviceable addition to science collections.
