From her experience with ruthless corporate practices, Wyse, president of an advertising firm that bears her name and a columnist for Good Housekeeping, sets out to expose the inner workings of executive life and to define the ingredients of success. In this aphoristic and anecdote-rich guide, she discusses "secrets" of achieving and retaining power as an entrepreneur or in a big corporation, including the ability to work as a team member without losing one's identity. Although she stresses that a company's interests are paramount, she also notes that it is good business to be loyal to clients and employees and treat them in a considerate manner. She urges chief executives to share with associates their aspirations for the company and for those involved in its operation as a means of fostering a common sense of purpose. 60,000 first printing; 50,000 ad/promo; Fortune Book Club, BOMC and Macmillan's Executive Program alternates; author tour. This book was written to disclose "the booby traps, the secret words, the clubby attitudes that make up company manners." The author's background and status in the corporate world enable her to do this, and she uses personal experiences to document her points. Included are a wide range of topics such as dealing with entrepreneurs, techniques of interviewing, firing employees, political game-playing techniques, traveling, gift giving, taking vacations, and cocktail party etiquette. However, much of Wyse's information is little more than common sense (or is irrelevant), and most of the more substantive material is covered in numerous other works. This book provides another perspective on the subject but its usefulness is limited. Grace Klinefelter, Ft. Lauderdale Coll. Lib., Fla.
