The Mechanics of Soils is primarily an undergraduate text dealing with the mechanics of engineering soils as they are sheared and compressed and when water flows through them. The approach to the subject is through the theory of critical state soil mechanics, but the treatment in the text is essentially non-mathematical. The theory of critical state soil mechanics provides the framework necessary for a proper understanding of soil behaviour and use the Cambridge and elsewhere for many years has demonstrated its value as a teaching method. The text is written for undergraduate students of civil engineering or geotechnical engineering at universities and polytechnics, but will also appeal to practising engineers and postgraduate students, seeking a simple introduction to recent advances in soil mechanics theory, in fields as diverse as rock mechanics, engineering geology, mining engineering, foundation engineering, powder technology, and materials handling.
