About the Author

You have installed a new adapter in your computer, which is running Windows 98. After the installation, you modified the CONFIG.SYS file manually. When you start the computer, the following error message is displayed: Error in CONFIG.SYS line 5. Which of the following would you rule out as a possible cause of the error?

A. The adapter is faulty. B. You have not installed the adapter driver. C. The file referenced in CONFIG.SYS does not exist in the specified location. D. There is a syntax error in CONFIG.SYS line 5.

A is correct. The adapter is certainly not causing the reported error in the CONFIG.SYS file. Such errors are reported when the operating system is unable to process any code specified in a particular line of the CONFIG.SYS file. Usually this error is produced either when a file specified in the CONFIG.SYS line is not found, or when the specified path is incorrect.

B is incorrect because it is possible that the CONFIG.SYS line 5 is referencing one of the driver files and is not able to find it. If you have modified the CONFIG.SYS file, which typically is done to load a specific driver file, and you have not installed the adapter driver, you will get this error. C is incorrect because this may also cause the given error. D is incorrect because if there is a syntax error in the CONFIG.SYS file, the operating system will not be able to process that line.
