Engaging students in active learning is the cornerstone of this innovative new text. It combines individual and small group problem-solving exercises ("think-pair-share") including data interpretation and analysis, along with an illustrated guide to key concepts in oceanography. Investigating the Ocean is intended for daily use as an in-class teaching and learning tool. It is designed to stimulate discussion, prompt critical thinking about the world around us, and explore the nature of science in a way that is accessible to all students. This text can be used as a supplementary text for large or small enrollment courses, whether the course has a separate laboratory or not. Tear-out pages allow for the collection of some or all of the in-class exercises, and many of these exercises can be used as the basis for more extensive homework or investigative projects. The text has been used successfully for several years by the authors and their colleagues in the Introduction to Oceanography course at The University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
