From the Introduction
October 4, 1998
I've been privileged to know and work with Paul Conte and Mike Otey for nearly a decade. During that time we've seen a number of operating systems, data base products, and programming paradigms come and go. Throughout this time both Paul and Mike have demonstrated an uncanny ability to see through the hype and identify significant trends and important products in the market. I can't tell you how many times I've turned to them for their opinion on new data base technology or new programming models.
Paul's understanding of data base architecture and programming structures is legendary (at least in my mind). His books and articles on these topics have undoubtedly inspired tens of thousands of data base administrators and programmers to create more organized data bases and write cleaner data base access code. It is rare to find someone who can so easily translate complex computer theories into practical actions.
Mike, on the other hand, is one of the most practical, down-to-earth gentlemen I've ever met. Mike's understanding of data base structure, storage, and retrieval is clearly comprehensive, however Mike never loses focus on solving real problems. To Mike, a data base product or programming interface is of no value unless it can be harnessed to solve a customer need or a business problem. Mike's problem-solving focus is a breath of fresh air in an industry more obsessed with features than solutions.
I was thrilled when I learned that Paul and Mike came together to work on this book about SQL Server 7.0. However, I'm even more thrilled about the result. In this book Paul and Mike provide a 360 degree perspective of SQL Server - they look at theoretical aspects of SQL Server, administrative aspects of SQL Server, practical applications for SQL Server, and more. More important, they deliver this information to you in a way that is both easily understood and practical.
In closing, this is not a book you curl up with in front of a fireplace and ponder the may realms of data base applications. Instead, this is a practical, hands-on book that you keep by your side as you strive to deliver or administer high-quality database solutions for your company.
