Although the book is primarily concerned with developed-country technology, the specialized aspects of water supply and sanitation in developing countries are also covered. A separate chapter deals with simple water supply and sanitation systems. Twenty per cent new text emphasizes the new concepts of environmental quality and their practical significance. In response to requests from readers of earlier editions, worked examples and problems are now included making this an ideal textbook for undergraduate courses in civil engineering and environmental sciences or a self-study text for those working for distance-learning qualifications.

As before, the book is intended for undergraduate courses in civil engineering and the environmental sciences, and as preliminary reading for postgraduate courses in public health engineering and water resources technology. It will also be a vital text for post-experience training and professional development, in particular for students preparing for the examinations of the Institute of Water Pollution Control and the Institution of Public Health Engineers.
