Marine Concrete Structures: Design, Durability and Performance comprehensively examines structures located in, under, or in close proximity to the sea. A major emphasis of the book is on the long-term performance of marine concrete structures that not only represent major infrastructure investment and provision, but are also required to operate with minimal maintenance.
Chapters review the design, specification, construction, and operation of marine concrete structures, and examine their performance and durability in the marine environment. A number of case studies of significant marine concrete structures from around the world are included which help to reinforce the principles outlined in earlier chapters and provide useful background to these types of structures. The result is a thorough and up-to-date reference source that engineers, researchers, and postgraduate students in this field will find invaluable.

Mark Alexander is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Director of the Concrete Materials and Structural Integrity Research Unit at UCT. He is a Fellow of the University of Cape Town and a registered Professional Engineer in South Africa. He teaches and researches in cement and concrete materials engineering relating to design and construction, with interests in concrete durability, service life prediction, concrete sustainability, and repair and rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete structures. He publishes regularly in local and international journals, and is President of RILEM, an international organisation linking experts and promoting research in civil engineering across 70 countries.
Marine Concrete Structures: Design, Durability and Performance offers comprehensive coverage on marine concrete structures; structures located either in, or in close proximity to, the sea. A major emphasis of the book is on durability and long- term performance, in view of the fact that such structures represent major infrastructure investment and provision, and are required to perform adequately for long periods of time with minimal maintenance.
Following the introductory chapter, Part One focuses on the design, specification, construction and maintenance of marine concrete structures. Chapters in Part Two consider performance and properties, including durability and deterioration. To help reinforce the principles outlined in earlier chapters, and provide useful background to these types of structures, Part Three is a wide-ranging collection of case studies of significant marine concrete structures. These include, inter alia, the Confederation Bridge in Canada, Danish Strait Crossings, marinas in the Gulf region, large and small harbour structures, and the new Panama Canal.
This book is a useful, ready-reference source for engineers, researchers and students in this field, giving information on types of marine structures, design, specification and construction, and the performance of materials and structures in the marine environment. Large investments will be directed to marine concrete structures in coming decades around the world, and the information provided in this book will be invaluable.
Mark G. Alexander is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town and Director of the Concrete Materials and Structural Integrity Research Unit. From 2012 to 2015, he was President of RILEM, an international organisation linking experts and promoting research in materials and structures in excess of 65 countries worldwide.
