K.A. Doxiadis, architect, planner, and theoretician, believed that problems of human settlements can be addressed only by a comprehensive and integrated approach. To this end, he formulated ekistics, the science of human settlements. He defined five ekistic elements: man, society, shells, networks, nature, and their interrelationships; and sought to relate any study of human settlements to units of the ekistic logarithmic scale, ranging from the individual (man, anthropos) to the entire world (ecumenopolis), extending from from the past to the distant future.
