The book is an attempt to identify and examine some central themes in recent Anglo-American philosophy. It isolates certain principles associated with the recent revolution in philosophy which have tended to separate the subject sharply from other disciplines and practices. Contrasts, which have encouraged this separation, such as those between first- and second-order activities and between fact and language, are examined and shown to be highly ambiguous. It is, consequently, argued that the separation cannot be justified on the basis of those background views. In addition a number of issues about history, perception, scepticism and ordinary language are discussed in order to throw light on the nature of philosophical tasks. The final suggestion is that since the genuine tasks of philosophy inevitably overlap those of other disciplines, philosophers should become more conscious of these connections.
An attempt has been made to stress the connections between different phases within the philosophical revolution, and also between revolutionary philosophers and their predecessors. In this way it is hoped that the book may be useful as an introduction to some issues in recent philosophy.
